About Kalimantan Tour Destinations – All-Inclusive, Small Jungle Cruises in Borneo, Indonesia

Come journey along one of Kalimantan’s mighty rivers, learn about Dayak culture and visit distant longhouses with Kalimantan Tour Destinations for iconic Indonesian experiences.  KTD offers enjoyable jungle cruises in Borneo, Indonesia, serving delicious food with excellent service, journeying into natural surroundings while educating guests about the environment, local traditions, and culture by engaging directly with the community as guides and hosts.  Also on offer are tours to longhouses in the interior and longer journeys encompassing Central, South, and East Kalimantan to visit orangutan centres and finishing in the remote Derawan Islands on your own tiny diving island.  Proximity to some of the last remaining Borneo lowland rainforests inhabited by orangutans and other exotic flora and fauna make Palangkaraya the perfect location for Kalimantan Tour Destinations to launch their keynote ecotourism experience, Jungle River Cruises aboard the Rahai’i Pangun.  Jungle River Cruises provides travelers to Central Kalimantan with minimal impact viewing of its rainforest, wildlife, and riverside Dayak villages from the vantage point of a traditional river mode of transportation.  It also benefits local communities by generating alternative livelihoods and teaching new skills that contribute to the development of a sustainable local eco-tourism economy.  The Rahai’i Pangun is a traditional river freighter converted by Kalimantan Tour Destinations into a comfortable river cruiser, perfectly designed for viewing the forests passing by on either side.

Our impact on the local community and more

Kalimantan Tour Destinations was launched in February 2008 to operate Jungle River Cruises and Eco Tours.  Our aim is to demonstrate that business can be a vehicle to support development problems by providing alternative livelihoods.

Our most significant achievement has been as a pioneer of ecotourism in this part of Kalimantan.  We built the concept, the boat, the community relationships, the government awareness and the market from zero and are proving that the concept works!

To achieve this,

  • We work in raising awareness both at the community level and with our guests.  At the community level we have meetings to facilitate community tourism plans and agree on prices for guides, traditional entertainment, hire of canoes, and a rota system for equitable sharing.  This is reviewed yearly.  We also alternate the villages that we visit.
  • We educate our guests on cultural norms and sensitivity.
  • We facilitate the local communities in creating and implementing their own tourism development plans and help to market their services.
  • It is important to us that local people benefit from this enterprise, so we have a policy to recruit and train our staff from the local community.  We have a staff development and training plan to encourage career advancement.  We ensure that our staff are well paid, receive performance bonuses, and have health insurance.
  • We have a policy of not buying our own canoes, speedboats, and car hire etc, but to hire these directly from the local community to ensure that they are gaining direct benefits from the tourists that we attract.
  • We support the local Sangars (village music and dance groups) and local handicrafts by encouraging our guests to take part in lessons or watch their performances.
  • We buy all our food for the trips locally and do not import food.

Once we are profitable we aim to provide 20% of our profits for micro-credit enterprises.  We advise the government on the need to promote ecotourism in Central Kalimantan and not mass tourism.  We were invited as guest speakers to APAI, a National Association of Ecotourism, working to promote responsible ecotourism in Indonesia.
