Our impact on the local community and more
Local communities in the rural areas where Evergreen Tours operates often experience substantial migration to urban areas in search of jobs. The urban areas to which they move are frequently overcrowded and lacking in basic facilities. The largest population of job seekers leaving local communities is youth, for whom it is not uncommon for 95% to leave their home village to go and work as skilled or unskilled laborers. Often, farm lands turn to forest due to a lack of farm workers in rural areas. To address this issue, Evergreen Tours and members of the local community from Tanchowk Village, Nepal, are building an eco-lodge, which will create jobs for local youth and women in particular and opportunities for locals to sell produce for meals at the lodge and handicrafts for souvenirs.
Additionally, Nepal’s education system lacks practical schooling outside of book learning, causing youth to grow frustrated and discontinue further education. In response, Evergreen Tours plans to open a vocational training center or school in the near future.
Evergreen Tours aims to bring economic activities to the villages and countryside in a sustainable way. They focus on caring for local communities and preserving local culture in the following ways:
- Employment: Using local guides or local people from each destination as much as possible to carry out the tours.
- Economy: Encouraging customers to buy local products available as souvenirs.
- Culture: Using local restaurants for dinning and celebrating local events.
