About Ecosphere Spiti – Trekking the Himalayas and Volunteer Trips
Ecosphere is a social enterprise that is a collaborative effort of the local community of Spiti and professionals from diverse backgrounds, with a wide spectrum of skills and experience. Our focus is to create sustainable livelihoods that are linked to nature and culture conservation. As a social enterprise, it is our mandate to address the triple bottom-line of conservation, development and economies.
Spiti is a “world within a world” (as described by Rudyard Kipling). It is a relatively unknown world, tucked away in northern India’s Himalayas. Reaching for the skies at high altitude, this peculiar geo-climatic cold desert region borders Tibet in the east and Ladakh in the north. Spanning an area of approximately 8000 sq km, Spiti is home to a purely homogenous Buddhist Society of just over 10,000, who bear stark cultural similarities with their neighbours in Tibet & Ladakh.
The best times to visit Spiti are May through October.
Ecosphere offers a variety of sustainable eco-tours and homestays. Options include spiritual sojourns, Himalayan trekking, biking through backcountry, jeep safaris, white water rafting, and volunteer trips with the local community. You can also create customized trips by contacing info@spitiecosphere.com.
Our impact on the local community and more
‘Responsible Eco-Travel’ is about making a positive contribution to the economy, culture and environment of the places you visit and at the same time giving the traveler one of the most inspiring and rewarding travel experiences.
Surreal Spiti is an endeavour to promote ‘Responsible Eco-travel’ in the Spiti valley. The objective of this programme is to develop unique, authentic and reliable tourism products and activities, link them to community livelihoods and conservation of culture & nature. This not only provides the community with a sustainable source of income but also serves as an incentive to conserve this unique ecological and cultural microcosm.
We are aware that a vast array of subtle complexities permeate the various facets of the Himalaya and are amply manifest in the ecology, people, culture, religion and geology of this extremely fragile and complex eco system.
We believe that travelling responsibly is a pre-requisite for the conservation of the resources on which tourism thrives and also a great way of ensuring that it creates equitable opportunities for those whose lands and cultures one visits.
At Ecosphere we are consciously striving towards ensuring that your visits to these pristine lands have minimum impact on the region and in turn directly contribute to local economies, conservation and development.
Ecosphere Spiti and its partner organisations have been involved in various projects pertaining to nature and culture conservation in the Spiti valley. Some of the activities being undertaken and proposed to be developed in the future are:
- Plantations and Nursery Development
- Campsite Management
- Garbage Management
- Restoration of Dhangkar monastery – www.dhangkar.com
- Provisions of alternate safe drinking water facilities
- Cultural conservation through homestays (local architecture, cuisine, etc)
- Promotion of cultural programs to revive local songs, dances, dresses
- Handicraft revival and promotion
- Wildlife Insurance Schemes
- Improvements in Livestock Pens
- Grazing Reserves
