Aparthotel Domus De Janas Sul Mare – Italy

About Aparthotel Domus De Janas Sul Mare

The Aparthotel Domus de Janas sul Mare, which is run by the Amaduzzi family, is directly situated at the idyllic beach of Torre di Bari.  It impresses its guests with its colorful sea of flowers that surrounds the whole building, giving it a wild, romantic touch.  From the clean, natural beach, to the hotel pool, to the inviting Spa-area, or the wide range of sports and leisure-time activities, the Hotel leaves nothing to be desired.  The Amaduzzi family puts special emphasis on an eco-friendly management of their Aparthotel, which includes not only the careful choice of food, but also the use of reusable energies or the waiver of ecologically damaging detergents.  A special highlight is the hotel’s breakfast, which offers a big variety of local products and home-made pastries.

Our impact on the local community and more

Since 1974 we have worked with tourism in Sardinia to help improve our community and our environment.  Our impact on the community has been significant, from sponsoring the village’s football teams, and both the cycling and tennis clubs, to donating money to help organize the local festivals held throughout the year called the “sagre”.  We also support the community by hiring only local employees.  We are proud to know that in a village of about 2500 inhabitants, we provide the income for 25 of those families.

We also use tourism to help our environment change under man’s influence.  We have chosen Ecotourism because we wish to leave our children with the same Sardinia we found when we came.  We are the first hotel in Sardinia to receive the European ecological certification (ECO-LABEL) for the quality of our environment.

Rain water is caught and collected from the deck and terraces through tubes that funnel it in a large terra-cotta bowl that releases the water on our plants.  A full bowl gets used in the course of a week.

The water pressure in an Eco-Label hotel is supposed to be max. 3,6 bars.  Our hotel was 4,6 bars buta simple reducer solved the problem and this way we saved about 7% of water.  The flush in a WC usually uses 6 litres.  Ours were using 7 so we added a one-litre water box and reduced our flush to 6 liters.  The flow cutters are also very important as they add air to the water flow and reduce water consumption by 10% as well as add an attractive visual to the flow.

90% of the light we use in the hotel is energy saving or led.

In all our hallways lights are controlled by presence sensors, only coming on when someone is present.  Light switches are also on a timer and turn off by themselves when they are not needed.

Waiting for the approval to build a photovoltaic system, all the electric energy that we buy for our hotel is produced from renewable energy sources.  We are sure of that through the RECS (Renewable Energy Certification System) that we received (58 in this case).  The producer receives 1 certificate each megawatt/hour per year that they produce and they can give them to private entities who cannot produce the energy themselves but would like to use clean energy.

The double doors protect the interior twice as much from cold and warm temperatures.  The double glazed windows further save energy from air-conditioning.

We apply a lot of bio-architecture criteria.  Thanks to the huge plants that surround the building, many of our terraces are protected from the sun and wind.  For instance a wall under the sun, when covered by a climber plant, has a lower temperature (up to 10 degrees) than one exposed directly to the sun.  To help our plants grow and climb the walls we attached metal trestles that now are all almost completely hidden by the flowers.

Packets of sugar are not recyclable, that’s why we have decided to offer jars of sugar as an alternative.  Italy uses about 16 billion packets of sugar per year that go to waste.  Therefore, we have tried to get rid of all individual packaging: butter is kept in small cubes on communal dishes instead of kept in separate packaging that goes to waste.  This is the same for our yoghurt which is delivered in boxes of 5kg.  We also substituted small individual marmalade packages with our own homemade, organic marmalade made with the fruit cultivated in a nearby field.  The making of our marmalade reduces energy costs as the fields are nearby and no energy is wasted in transportation. Our croissants, cakes, and cookies are all homemade and use our own marmalade.
